Our Best Tips for Caring for Your Fresh Cut Christmas Tree

The holiday season is near, and if your holiday tradition includes getting a real Christmas tree, the time to find that perfect tree is now. Keeping your fresh cut tree vibrant and fragrant through the holiday season doesn’t have to be complicated! By following our simple tips, you can extend your Christmas tree’s life and ensure it stays healthy and safe.

When to Get Your Fresh Cut Christmas Tree

The best time to get your tree will depend on how long you want to have it up and decorated in your house. If you want your tree to last through December, visiting our farm after Thanksgiving is best. If you’d like your fresh cut tree to last a few weeks after the holidays are over, waiting until mid-December will be your best option. It’s also important to keep in mind that many trees are offered on a first come, first serve basis. To ensure you have the best selection available, it’s always best to visit your local tree farm sooner rather than later.

How Long Does a Fresh Cut Tree Last

If properly cared for, your fresh cut tree can last 4-6 weeks. Exactly how long your tree will last depends on several factors including how well it's taken care of, the species of tree you cut, and where it’s located in your home. Keeping your tree away from excessive heat and direct sunlight will help it stay fresher for longer. The freshness of your tree when you purchase it will also impact how long it lasts. The longer a tree sits on a lot, the less fresh they become. When buying your Christmas tree from Lee Farms, you don’t have to guess how fresh the tree is even if you buy one of our already cut trees! We are a real tree farm, so all of our trees are grown and harvested right on the farm ensuring maximum freshness for a beautiful tree that will last.

Fresh Christmas Tree Care Instructions

Caring for your real Christmas tree will ensure it stays fresh, safe, and beautiful throughout the holiday season. After visiting Lee Farms to get your fresh-cut tree, be sure to follow the simple steps below to help your tree maintain its vibrant appearance and festive charm.

Easy Christmas Tree Care Instructions

  • Trim the Trunk: Before placing your tree in its stand, cut 1-2 inches off the base to help it absorb water.

  • Choose the Right Spot: Avoid placing your tree near heat sources like fireplaces, heating vents, and direct sunlight.

  • Water Immediately and Often: Be sure to place your tree in water as soon as possible after it’s cut, and check the water daily to refill it as needed.

  • Avoid Chemicals: Plain water is best for your tree to keep it looking and smelling fresh.

  • Monitor for Safety: When your tree becomes too dry, be sure to take your holiday decorations off and remove the tree from your home.

Watering Your Fresh Cut Tree

Watering your fresh-cut Christmas tree is essential for keeping it healthy and safe throughout the holiday season. After being cut, a tree will start losing its moisture. Regular watering helps a real tree maintain its freshness which keeps the needles from drying out and falling off prematurely. Keeping your tree watered will also reduce the risk of it becoming brittle and flammable. Your fresh cut tree should be watered daily, and the size of your tree will determine how much water it needs.

At Lee Farms we grow several varieties of trees including Noble Fir, Nordmann Fir, Grand Fir, and  Douglas Fir.

  • Noble Fir: Known for their strong, evenly spaced branches, Noble Firs are ideal for heavy ornaments. They also have excellent needle retention.

  • Nordmann Fir: Nordmanns have softer needles and a symmetrical shape. Similar to a Noble, they have strong branches and are less likely to lose needles.

  • Grand Fir: Recognized for their rich fragrance and more open spaced branches, a Grand Fir will bring a traditional holiday feel to your home.

  • Douglas Fir: Popular for their full shape, vibrant green color, and sweet scent, Douglas Firs are a perfect choice if you’re looking for a thicker, fuller, classic Christmas tree.
